MACK® TerraPro™ Reveals All on TV’s Sliced
Tuesday. May 25. 2010
GREENSBORO, NC (May 25, 2010) – The star of this week’s episode of the television program Sliced is tough, rugged and good looking. But the show’s host, John McCalmont, shows viewers that what’s inside really counts.
That’s because an EPA2010 emissions-certified MACK® TerraPro™ model is in the spotlight on the May 27 episode of Sliced, a new program on History™. Each week, the show’s host uses a variety of tools to slice objects apart, layer by layer, and explore how they work. On previous episodes of the show, McCalmont has sliced objects ranging from an Etch-A-Sketch to an armored van.
This time, though, it’s the real “inside scoop” on a Mack truck, as Sliced takes on a Mack refuse vehicle – commonly known as a garbage truck – first pushing it to its limits, then cutting it apart to see how it works. Can it eat a limo? How much can it hold? And can a garbage truck really be clean?
The truck in the show is a Mack TerraPro model that Republic Services has been testing for the past 12 months. The truck is equipped with the MACK® ClearTech™ emissions control system, which reduces engine emissions to the near-zero levels required for 2010. Heil Environmental manufactured the truck body. The truck was ready to come out of field service and be recycled for secondary use when the Sliced opportunity arose.
The show focuses on Mack’s ClearTech SCR system, and the fact that today’s trucks “are not belching black smoke like 20 years ago,” said Curtis Dorwart, Mack vocational products marketing manager. He was on the Boston-area set during the filming to represent Mack and advise the show’s staff on what and where to slice.
“The show proves just how tough the TerraPro model is,” said Dorwart. “But the ClearTech SCR system is the technology story.”
ClearTech uses proven selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) to near-zero, while at the same time improving fuel economy by up to 5 percent. Mack has been building trucks equipped with ClearTech on its production line since November 2009 and testing vehicles in the field for more than two years.
As for the show itself? “We expected the cutting to be more surgical in nature, but what happened was more of a ‘Monster Garage’ approach,” Dorwart noted. “I think it will be entertaining and informative.”
To get a real inside look at a Mack TerraPro, tune in to Sliced, on Thursday, May 27, 2010, at 10 p.m. Eastern or catch a repeat of the episode on Monday, May 31.
