D.C. Sees the Future of Diesel Power from Mack Trucks, Inc.

Wednesday. September 30. 2009

The nation’s capital witnessed the fuel efficiency and near-zero emissions of Mack Trucks, Inc.’s diesel engines and emissions control systems on September 29 during a Clean Diesel Power event in downtown Washington.

Mack displayed a MACK® Pinnacle™ tractor equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) emissions control system to comply with the very stringent EPA2010 emissions limits for nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM).  The event was hosted by the Diesel Technology Forum.

The Pinnacle model was equipped for long-haul highway service with a 60-inch midrise sleeper and a 13-liter Mack MP8 engine.  The Mack MP series engines and the Mack SCR technology combine to deliver better fuel economy and lower operating costs, while meeting the near-zero emissions required by the EPA2010 standards.  In addition, Mack does not need to rely on emissions credits to meet the new regulations.

Mack officials at the event pointed out that better fuel economy means lower emissions of greenhouse gases, a smaller carbon footprint and less dependence on imported oil, all of which benefit society.

The Mack SCR technology also essentially eliminates active regenerations of the diesel particulate filter (DPF), saving even more fuel and further reducing operating costs.  Mack has been testing SCR in North America customer fleets for more than two years, and the technology has billions of miles of real-world experience in other markets.  Mack is already building customer production-level trucks in its Macungie Assembly Operations outside Allentown, Pennsylvania.
